Resident Evil 4 Remake looks to be shaping up to be something very special thanks to the latest information from Capcom in the latest Resident Evil Showcase.
Resident Evil 4 Coming to PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC early next year took its deepest dive yet, wrapping up the October 20th Resident Evil Showcase with multiple trailers and an abundance of all-new details.
New footage from the remake draws a fine line between the familiar and the new. The intro, for example, in which Leon first encounters Ganado’s parasitic villagers, has been greatly expanded. He’s no longer a guy tending a fireplace on the corner. It’s now a Resident Evil Village-style tour of a decrepit house, with Leon exploring a new section of the basement before encountering the game’s (presumably) first villager.
Capcom controls the new for the old when it comes to the iconic survival of the village square. The layout is virtually identical to the original game and works as you’d expect if you’re familiar with the Gamecube classic. There are some positive changes, however. The Doctor. Chainsaw-wielding Salvador looks much more menacing, with frantic eyes staring at holes drilled in his sackcloth hood.

Throughout the Resident Evil 4 showcase, the hits kept coming. Fans like me have wondered how much the remake will alter – or potentially dilute – the iconic goofy fourth entry in the series. But most of what made RE4 so special seems to be intact.
Sans Jack Krauser, let’s take a look at all the returning villains from the game, including village chief Bitores Mendez and even the hilarious pompous Ramon Salazar and his Xenomorph-like Verdugo bodyguards. This in turn means that arguably the most strangely unreal section of the original, the castle, will return in Resident Evil 4 Remake.
I could go on about how much I appreciate the remake’s commitment to ridiculousness, including the return of wacky bosses like Del Lago and El Gigante. But the one thing I’m really happy to see return is the iconic merchant.
This cockney swashbuckler was always eye candy in the original game. His assortment of merchandise and charming, gruff British accent were what made repeat play a joy. Capcom must have thought RE4 without the merchant would be like Resident Evil 2 without the giant sewer crocodile: unplayable.
But perhaps my favorite thing about Resident Evil 4 Remake is that it’s not without a new ridiculousness of its own. Yes, Leon’s trademark circular kick is back. But now he can also parry with his knife. Yes, pitchforks and chainsaws can be struck with a flick of the blade. It’s deliciously absurd. In other words, a perfect fit for Resident Evil 4.
