Ikea is ready to join the vinyl renaissance. The flat furniture maker has just released a new turntable as part of a collaboration with electronic music stars Swedish House Mafia.
Unveiled at Milan Design Week 2022, the turntable is part of a new collection called OBEGRÄNSAD, which also includes a music production table and armchair, with all three products sharing a sleek black aesthetic.
There are few technical details so far available for the turntable, so it’s hard to say whether it will challenge the best turntables, but from the promotional photos released so far of the striking minimalistic box design, it seems far removed from the flimsy excuses for decks you’d like to see. tends to associate with a conventional retailer.
While not mentioned in Ikea’s press release, attentive readers may have noticed the Audio-Technica logo on the pen, which suggests this deck might be a contender.
And you won’t need to fill your room with separate hi-fi devices; the turntable also features a built-in preamp, with the decks powered by a simple USB cable.
While Ikea makes a point of saying that the decks team up seamlessly with their own Eneby Bluetooth speakers, it doesn’t look like the decks actually have wireless connectivity, with the turntable seeming to connect via the speaker’s aux input.
According to Swedish House Mafia, the line’s design “supports creating, playing, enjoying and even setting the mood.” Commenting on the turntable, Ikea designer Friso Wiersma says: “The solid, robust design gives the player a presence in the room – it conveys the physicality of the music in the collection, making it truly claim space with the attitude of the woven music. in it–rather than causing it to blend in.”
While this may be the first Ikea-branded turntable to hit the market since the 1970s, it’s not the first time the company has dabbled in the idea of releasing a 21st century set of steel wheels.
Another collaboration with Swedish consumer electronics brand Teenage Engineering was slated to include a record-playing device in 2019, but sadly never saw the light of day.
Meanwhile, the OBEGRÄNSAD table looks like the bit could be a big hit with creative and tech gamers and gamers. Primarily aimed at home studio music producers, with its removable shelf allowing space for a midi keyboard, it also has two ear height monitor speaker stands that can endear it to video editors.
There are currently no pricing available for the new OBEGRÄNSAD range, but all three products are expected to hit stores this fall.
Analysis: Ikea’s new turntable looks set to become another Scandinavian pop hit
While there’s no indication at this point whether or not the OBEGRÄNSAD decks will be limited-edition, record store owners will no doubt keep it all crossed so they reach as many homes as Ikea’s venerable Kallax shelves.
Vinyl’s resurgence shows no signs of abating, and an affordable, basic turntable offered by one of the world’s biggest retailers is sure to lure more music lovers into the record-buying bug.
We would have loved to have seen some wireless connectivity on board and the ability to pair with Ikea’s Sonos-compatible SYMFONISK speakers, but perhaps that’s too much to ask from a device that probably won’t cost much more than a family meal of meatballs.
