Earfun UBoom L: Two-minute review
EarFun isn’t the most well-known company in the audio world, but it’s steadily approaching our radar with some competitively priced speakers and headphones. The EarFun UBoom L speaker is the latest of these releases and focuses on the ongoing need for waterproof speakers that can withstand a raucous pool party while still sounding so great indoors.
As some of the best Bluetooth speakers on the market, the EarFun UBoom L Speaker specifically targets both arenas by having both indoor and outdoor modes, although we tend to be more fun to use outside.
Created in collaboration with Austrian music producer Olaf Lubanski, this very well designed speaker. It might look pretty ordinary on the surface, but underneath, it packs a decent punch, offering a compelling soundstage that’s further enhanced if you pair it with a second speaker.
The form has robustness written throughout. You can place it horizontally or vertically and it will look reasonably good on everything but the roughest outdoor surfaces (like our lawn).
Setup is a breeze we’ve come to expect, with clearly laid out buttons at the top dictating control for volume, power, Bluetooth and which sound mode you want to use. On the back is the 3.5mm auxiliary input and a USB-C port for charging – both of which can be hidden when you want to use the speaker by the pool.
While the bass might be a little deeper and stronger, the EarFun UBoom L’s audio experience is still pretty good. Even on its own, it offers a wide soundstage that is further enhanced when you pair two together for stereo sound. The vocals sound clear and well defined, with no fuss to notice.
It’s highly likely that if you’re enjoying the great outdoors you won’t need the richest, most detailed audio performances, but the EarFun UBoom L speaker still does a good job of sounding smooth, without grain or harshness.
At a nominal price of $99 / £99 and already heavily discounted, the EarFun UBoom L Speaker is a bargain, offering a robust design without skimping on good sound quality.
Earfun UBoom L: Price and release date
- Released July 11, 2022
- Official price of $99 / £99 but already discounted
The EarFun UBoom L speaker is now available in the US and UK. It’s only available in one color scheme – black – but its price has already started to drop.
With a standard price of $99 / £99 (that’s about AU$173), at the time of writing we’ve seen the EarFun UBoom L Speaker available for $79.99 / £79.99, despite having been released recently.
That makes it really affordable compared to competitors like the Sonos Roam, JBL Flip 6 or Ultimate Ears Boom 3. Yes, that’s likely because EarFun is a lesser-known name, but that doesn’t mean it’s unworthy now, does it?
Earfun UBoom L: Design and Features
- IP67 dustproof and waterproof
- Up to 16 hours of playback
- Bluetooth 5.0
The EarFun UBoom L speaker measures 210 x 78 x 72mm and weighs 2.1 pounds, which means that even with small hands it is reasonably easy to hold in one hand. It has a black fabric cover and a rubberized coating over its plastic frame that also provides additional grip when you hold it.
OK, it looks like (almost) every other Bluetooth speaker out there, which is good and bad. Unlike other party speakers, the EarFun UBoom L won’t put on a show visually – don’t expect light shows or spotlights here.
At the top are tactile buttons representing volume, power, Bluetooth, play/pause and the choice of sound modes. Indoor and outdoor modes are your options here, with the latter boosting bass and improving performance in a noisier outdoor environment.
On the back is a rubber cap that protects the 3.5mm aux input and USB-C port from the elements. There’s no charging plug included, but you do get a USB-C cable. The EarFun UBoom L is waterproof so you don’t have to worry about getting wet when walking in bad conditions or even in the pool.
It’s possible to stereo pair two of the speakers, which makes a big difference if you want to spread the sound, but we’ll get to the sound quality shortly.
Designed to stand horizontally, the EarFun UBoom L can also be placed vertically on most surfaces, although in terms of sound, it’s best left horizontal.
Up to 16 hours of battery life is promised and here, the EarFun UBoom L speaker delivers. The 5,200 mAh battery will make you have fun all day without any problems. This is no doubt aided by Bluetooth 5.0, which also means we haven’t seen our connection drop at any time.
Earfun UBoom L: Sound quality
- 2 drivers 55mm
- wide sound stage
- Boosted bass when you pair two stereo speakers
The EarFun UBoom L features two 55mm drivers and two passive bass radiators. Combined, you get a pretty strong audio experience. The bass could be a little deeper and punchier, but it’s a relatively small complaint given the price. We only noticed this when listening to particularly raunchy tracks like Fleetwood Mac’s the current and Foo Fighters’ All my life.
Elsewhere, there’s the benefit of a wide soundstage, even with just one speaker. Add a second speaker and the bass will become stronger and the soundstage even wider, but one will still do a good job of making you feel immersed in the music.
Using Indoor mode leads to some detailed mids and crisp highs. There’s no harshness here, with the likes of David Bowie Under pressure sounding rich and clear. Listening to classical music brings the same result, while Childish Gambino looks like summer sounds appropriately exciting.
Nothing about the sound quality of the EarFun UBoom L speaker is boring. The only problem is this: if you want powerful bass, you’ll have to look elsewhere – but then again, that’s often the case with smaller, portable Bluetooth proposals.
Switch to Outdoor mode and the bass is boosted a little, so you can choose to do that when you need to. There’s still clarity on every note, at least, because this particular mode is designed to ensure you can hear it above the background noise. There is no app to adjust the equalizer here, so a change of modes is your best bet to customize your sound experience.
Earfun UBoom L: Value
- highly competitive price
- Worth buying two
- Incredible sound value per pound
There’s no two ways: the EarFun UBoom L speaker is fantastic value. At its regular price of $99 / £99 it’s already worth it, but the best part is that it’s already being discounted.
In fact, in some cases (and we’re factoring in the cost-of-living crisis here) it’s probably worth buying two so you can pair them with stereo sound and still pay less than you would for a product from a higher-end brand. known.
Either way, for a solid sound-per-pound value, you can’t go wrong with Earfun’s UBoom L.
